TUTO: KIDS BEACH PONCHO

It's DIY o'clock! Today, to celebrate summer, a tuto that smells of the sea and vacations: a beach poncho!

Very easy to make, all you need is a few towels and a sewing machine (here some towels we found on Leboncoin + leftover coupons from our DIY beach towel "parasol").

It takes just a handful of hours to complete, thanks to our free pattern download hereThe pattern children's range, from 1 to 5 years old, is so easy to adapt.

Bonus: we've also prepared an " adult " pattern , which you can find here. 🧵🪡
One size fits all, roomy and comfortable - feel free to alter the measurements to suit your needs.

👉 For this DIY you need:

  • pattern to print, cut and assemble
  • beach or bath towels (minimum 3 for a child's poncho; for an adult poncho, feel free to assemble several pieces if you don't have enough in size)
  • ribbon (4 x 30cm)
  • sewing machine
  • pins
  • scissors

👉 How to make this DIY:

Print the pattern 100% A4 format. Assemble it by matching the markings and tape it down. Cut pattern to the desired size for your child.

You get 3 pattern pieces. Pin them to your napkins according to the instructions, and cut directly around them: 1cm seam allowances are included. We cut with serrated scissors to avoid fabric lint, but this is optional!

Cut out all the necessary parts:
  • 2 for body/bust (1 striped, 1 plain)
  • 2 pieces for the hood
  • 1 "sun" circle
Pin the 2 body parts together right sides together, with the neckline on your right.

Straight-stitch the entire side at 1cm, right sides together, except for the neckline, which you leave unstitched. Hop! You've already got the body! Press your seams open.

Place the yellow circle on the right side, position and pin. Set your machine to the zig-zag stitch. Stitch all around the circle, 5mm apart, so that the zig-zag barely overlaps the fabric underneath.

When sewing with the zig-zag stitch, always remove the pins as you go, before inserting the needle (unlike the straight stitch).

And that's it! Your "sun" is applied to the fabric.

Now hem the unfolded body inwards by 1cm to make it look more attractive. If you want a perfect finish, you can even apply a bias, or make a lining, but beware of sand getting stuck in the lining :-)

Let's move on to the hood. This will be applied to the neckline, from back to front.

First, lay the 2 parts right sides together, pin the round part from the nape of the neck to the top of the head, and machine-stitch. Iron the seams.

Turn inside out, and hem 1cm all around the face, towards the inside.

Turn it over. The hood is ready! Place the middle of the neck right sides together with the middle of the back neckline. Pin in place. From this point, continue pinning on both sides, all the way to the front (always counting the 1 cm seam allowance). Stitch!

Now hem the front neckline by tucking it in 1cm, and continue this seam all around the neckline to complete your finish.

Cut 4x 30 cm of ribbon. Pin them to the bust as shown in the video. Sew them to the bust.

Finally, turn the ends over 5mm, then 5mm again to hem them. Machine stitch.

And ... TA-DA !!!
