TUTO: canvas stool

We all know those little stools ... easy to find on @leboncoin, at flea markets, or even at a family member's house! How do you combine them with another ultra-easy-to-find item: canvas? Let's go for a DIY that brings two 100% vintage items up to date ❤️

👉For this DIY you need:

  • a vintage stool with an unscrewable seat
  • a canvas slightly larger than the seat
  • lining fabric (same size + 1cm seam all around)
  • a piece of foam (here, 50 x 50 of 5cm thick foam)
  • wall stapler and staples
  • cutter and scissors
  • erasable marker, pins and thread

👉What to do?

Turn the stool over and unscrew the seat. Place it on the foam and trace the outline of the shape. Cut out the foam and trim the corners with scissors. Take your canvas. If, like us, it's on a support (cushion, frame...) free it from this support using a scissors or a quick-cutter, but don't cut into the canvas so that it doesn't fray.
Place the foam on the seat, then lay the canvas on the foam, right-side out. Turn over, and fold the edges of the canvas over the underside of the seat, stapling the 4 cardinal points first, then refine by stapling all around, pulling well so that it's smooth and well balanced on the top of the stool. Fold in the corners as shown, then staple.
For a nice finish, take a fabric for the lining, cut it to the same dimensions, adding 1cm to the seam allowance, and iron this hem. Then secure your fabric under the seat with pins, folding in the corners slightly as shown. Hand-stitch the entire contour of your lining to your canvas in small, discreet stitches. Then use the tip of a needle to find the exact location of the holes in which the screws were inserted. Mark them with a dry-erase marker. Using the cutter, score these 4 points crosswise, so that the screw doesn't take your fabric with it when you screw in. Finally, screw the 4 screws back into place. Remove all traces of erasable felt-tip pen. And... TA-DA!
